The gateway system is a Linux computer with an Internet connection that is also monitoring each transmission received by the repeaters RF section from local stations and takes actions based on commands it sees within the transmissions. It also monitors transmissions from other linked systems and sends them out over the air locally, if appropriate.
We've programmed the WA7DRE D-STAR repeater to connect to our home reflector, the Washington State Reflector, REF035C most days from 6am until 10pm. Otherwise, it will not be connected to any reflector and you are free to use it to connect to other repeaters or reflectors.
The reflector is quiet enough that we can have short, local QSO's while connected. Please don't disconnect from REF035C just to have a local chat.
Even while it is connected to our home reflector, you can disconnect it, and use it to connect to other reflectors and repeaters if you like. When you are done, please return the linking status to the condition you found it in.
